Bariatric Surgery in Framingham, MA

The physicians at MetroWest Physician Services provide bariatric surgery in Framingham, Massachusetts for patients who need some extra help losing weight. Obesity is not just a cosmetic concern, but also a health concern that can cause or worsen type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, osteoporosis, stroke, certain types of cancer, and more, which is why we are dedicated to helping our patients achieve a healthy weight.

Even modest weight loss can reduce a person’s risk of disease, but sometimes dietary changes, physical activity, and behavior changes alone are not enough to make a significant impact on health. Medical interventions ranging from therapy and medication to various surgical procedures can also be utilized to help an individual reduce their body fat and improve their health.

There are several types of surgical and non-surgical weight loss surgeries available for patients who need medical interventions to lose weight. These include:

  • Gastric banding: A less invasive option than gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery, gastric banding is a procedure where a band is attached to the top portion of the stomach to slow digestion, helping the patient to feel fuller longer. The band can be adjusted by a physician so that it can be made looser or tighter as needed.
  • Gastric bypass: A gastric bypass procedure involves creating a new gastric pouch at the bottom of the esophagus. The pouch uses a small part of the stomach that is then connected to the small intestine. The rest of the stomach is sealed off, or bypassed. This significantly reduces the stomach size, so that it can only hold a small amount of food. The patient can still receive the nutrients that they need, but they will feel full faster, and consume less food.
  • Gastric sleeve: Also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, a gastric sleeve procedure involves removing a large part of the stomach. The esophagus is then connected to the small intestines through the smaller stomach “sleeve.” This significantly reduces the stomach size so that it can only hold a small amount of food, but the needed nutrients can still be received by the body. This causes the patient to feel full faster so that the amount of food they consume becomes smaller.
